A word about daily fantasy sports sites' rake

It's a common misconception that daily fantasy sports sites offer rake (also known as the "juice" or "vig") amounts that are similar or equal to a sports wager made at -110.

Sportsbooks offer gamblers a line of -110 on each side of a point-spread contest. For example, if you want to bet on the Knicks -5, you'll need to risk $110 to win $100. When you win your bet, you'll receive $210 from the sportsbook.

The rake on that is 10%, but you only pay that if you lose. Of course, if you are able to never make a losing sports bet, there's a fine chance you're not reading this article.

In daily fantasy sports land, let's say you enter an $11 50-50 contest, and get $20 if you win. The profit here is only $9. To break even, the player needs to win 55% of these contests. That equals a sports bet with a line of -122.

Not quite the same as -110, is it?

Keep in mind that some sites offer different rakes, but aren't exactly making it clear what that rake is. Also note the rake at most sites aren't consistent between dollar levels. You'll pay more rake in lower stakes games.
